There is a strange thing happening to houses.

We are seeing more of them than ever before, and somehow they are starting to look more alike.

Scroll through Instagram, Pinterest or a real estate listing site and you will see the same kitchens, the same oversized islands, the same neutral walls, the same carefully folded throws, the same perfectly styled coffee tables. There is usually a vase somewhere. Maybe a fiddle leaf fig. Definitely a cutting board leaning against something.

None of it is bad.

In fact, most of it is beautiful.

But after a while, you start to wonder when a house stopped being a place to live and started becoming a backdrop for proving that you know how to live.

We have become very good at making homes look finished.

The problem is that actual life is rarely finished.

There are fingerprints on the refrigerator. There is a pile of mail on the counter. Someone left a water bottle beside the couch. The blanket is not folded. The dog got mud on the floor five minutes after you cleaned it.

The dining table has receipts on it.

And somehow, that is usually the part of the house that never makes it onto the internet.

There is a pressure, especially when buying or selling a home, to understand what is currently considered desirable. Certain finishes are popular. Certain colors photograph well. Certain rooms seem to appear over and over again in renovation videos and design accounts.

But trends have a way of making us forget that a home is supposed to serve the people living inside it.

Maybe you actually like color.

Maybe you want a dining room because you host Thanksgiving every year.

Maybe the giant kitchen island matters less to you than having a quiet office with a door that closes.

Maybe you would rather have a weird little sunroom than another bathroom.

Maybe the 1970s house with the original cabinets makes you happier than the brand new house with every finish selected from the same five samples.

There is nothing wrong with wanting a beautiful house.

The question is whether you are choosing what you genuinely like or simply recognizing what you have been taught to like.

That distinction becomes particularly interesting when you are looking at homes.

A perfectly staged house can make it very easy to imagine a version of your life that looks good in photographs. The clean countertops. The perfectly made bed. The empty entryway. The beautiful dining table with exactly four chairs around it and absolutely nothing on top.

But buying a house is not buying the photograph.

You are buying Tuesday morning.

You are buying the laundry.

The groceries.

The birthdays.

The sick days.

The Christmas decorations that come out of storage every December.

The random chair that eventually becomes the place where everyone drops their clothes.

You are buying the version of the house that exists after the photographer leaves.

And that version is usually much more interesting.

Maybe the living room eventually becomes a place where teenagers pile onto the floor.

Maybe the beautiful dining room becomes the place where you work three days a week.

Maybe the spare bedroom turns into a craft room, a nursery, a home gym or a place where your mother stays when she visits.

Maybe the kitchen gets painted a color that would make a designer pause.

Good.

The house is yours.

There is something to be said for allowing a home to become personal enough that it could not be mistaken for anybody else’s.

That does not mean ignoring design or resale value. Those things matter, and there are practical reasons to consider how a home will hold its value over time.

But there is a difference between making thoughtful choices and making every choice based on whether someone else will approve of them.

The most memorable houses are rarely the ones where everything matched perfectly.

They are the ones where you can tell someone actually lives there.

A stack of cookbooks beside the stove. A gallery wall that grew one frame at a time. A ridiculous lamp that makes no sense with anything else but somehow belongs there. A chair inherited from a grandmother. A room painted a color simply because someone loved it.

Those things don’t necessarily photograph perfectly.

They do something better.

They tell you who lives there.

And maybe that is worth remembering the next time you find yourself standing in a beautiful house wondering why you cannot quite picture yourself in it.

You do not need your home to look like everyone else’s.

You need it to look like you live there.

There are certain weekends when Billings feels a little different.

You hear it before you see it.

The unmistakable roar overhead. A few heads turn toward the sky. Then a few more. Before long, half the city seems to be looking up.

The Yellowstone International Air Show returned to Billings this past weekend, and for a couple of days, the sky above our city became the main event.

We were lucky enough to have a particularly good view.

No grandstands. No fighting for a parking spot. Just the rooftop of our office building, our team, and a front row view from above the streets of the city we get to call home.

And honestly? It was pretty hard to beat.

A City Looking Up

There’s something unusual about an event you don’t necessarily have to go to to experience.

Across Billings, people watched from yards, parking lots, patios, parks, rooftops, and just about anywhere else with a decent patch of open sky.

For a few hours, whatever everyone had been doing became secondary. Because when an aircraft comes thundering overhead, conversation has a tendency to stop.

You look up.

That’s part of what makes an air show such a different kind of community event. The boundaries of the venue disappear. The show spills out over the city, and suddenly thousands of people in completely different places are sharing essentially the same experience.

From our rooftop, we got to watch that happen.

We could see the city below us and the show above us, and somewhere in between were countless other people doing exactly what we were doing.

Watching. Waiting. And occasionally trying to figure out where the next plane was coming from before it appeared.

The Rooftop Advantage

We’ll admit it: having an office rooftop for air show weekend feels a little like discovering you’ve been sitting on prime real estate all along.

Pun very much intended.

Up there, Billings looks different.

The familiar streets stretch out beneath you. The Rims frame the city in the distance. Buildings you’ve driven past hundreds of times suddenly become part of a much larger landscape.

Then an aircraft cuts across all of it.

For a real estate office, there’s something rather fitting about experiencing a Billings tradition from that perspective.

We spend our working days thinking about this city one property at a time: one street, one neighborhood, one house, one client.

From the roof, you get the whole thing at once.

More Than an Air Show

Big community events have a funny way of reminding you what a city feels like beyond its normal routine.

They give people a reason to gather. Local businesses get busier. Families make plans. Friends claim their viewing spots. Kids experience something they’ll probably remember far longer than anyone expects.

And the city gets to show off a little.

Billings does this particularly well.

We’re large enough to host events that draw people from across the region, but still small enough that something happening overhead can become a shared conversation by Monday morning.

“Where did you watch from?”

“Did you see that pass?”

“Could you hear it from your house?”

For us, the answer to the first question is an easy one.

The roof.

Same Time Next Year?

Eventually, the sky quieted down.

Everyone headed downstairs, Billings returned to its regularly scheduled weekend, and our rooftop went back to simply being a rooftop.

But for a little while, it was something considerably better.

It was our team’s gathering place. Our viewing deck. And quite possibly one of the best seats in Billings.

There are plenty of things we love about working in the heart of this city. This weekend gave us one more to add to the list.
